I know many people are interested in bringing Malawi into the classroom and
so I have devised a photocopiable resource pack which I hope will help you do
so. During my time in country I took many photographs, collected children's
illustrations of everyday life, copied extracts from local news, collected local
stories and beliefs from the villages and collected statistics to compile this
resource pack. The units are designed around standard topics we teach in most
schools and so can be integrated alongside your topic or used as stand alone
units. It will add an element to your Global Education Programme and is
invaluable for schools who have links or who wish to have a partner school in
Malawi.
Having taught infants, middle primary and senior primary I know how time
consuming it can be to make these things and I hope this makes it easier for you
and interesting for your pupils. Please note this is not a laminated,
professional pack merely a bank of photocopiable worksheets made by a teacher
for a teacher.
The contents are as follows
- 2 units for use at infant level covering HOUSES and HOMES,
TOYS
- 2 units for middle primary covering TRANSPORT and SCHOOLS
- 2 units for senior primary covering FOOD and HEALTH
- A CD-Rom with around 250 photographs relating to the above
units for teachers to use as appropriate.
- A 'home made' DVD' with 2 Malawian children
presenting 'A day in their lives'

Each unit contains pupil photocopiable worksheets and approximately 6-10
lessons with a suggested topic outline. Please note the DVD is home made so the
quality is not of a high standard but I was sleeping on the mud floor, collecting
firewood and fetching water at 5am so it is good given the circumstances (I'm
not a morning person and certainly not a 5am morning person!). There is some
traditional music and an edited fact file at the beginning which is nice and
lively and provides information for the older children - it does give a fairly
good view of the children's daily lives.
The cost of the pack is £55 with a £5 donation going directly back into primary schools in Zomba District, Southern
Malawi where I worked (No handling fees disappearing or high ranking officials
salaries to be paid - it goes directly to the school). There is also a orphan
schooling programme I would like to contribute to so if sales go well that would
be my next target. Please pass this information on to anyone else who may be
interested. To purchase click the button, download the order form and post.
